A faculty colleague at Carroll forwarded this campus announcement sent at Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon regarding their first campus death from the 2009 H1N1 flu virus:
To the Lewis & Clark Campus Community,
It is with deep sadness that i write to inform you that a member of our community, a student in the Master of Arts in Teaching program in our Graduate School of Education and Counseling, has died of complications from H1N1.
(Name of Student), an off-campus resident, was admitted to a local hospital early last week with flu-like symptoms. The illness advanced to the point that he developed accute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), which led to his death this weekend.
A variety of college staff are making themselves available today to meet with students, faculty, and staff affected by (Name of Student)'s passing. Staff from the Counseling Service, Health Promotion and Wellness Office, and the Chapel are providing support at the Graduate School throughout the day. These staff are also meeting with students from (Name of Student)'s cohort in the 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. class periods. Resources for students in the College of Arts and Sciences will be made available as needed.
This is the first flu death in our campus community. To preserve our health and safety, it is incumbent on all to know and follow the public health recommendations related to H1N1. I urge all members of the campus community--students, faculty, and staff--to review once again the safety information on our H1N1 website and to follow closely the preventive measures outlined on those pages. You will find the site at: http://go.lclark.edu/h1n1. If you are in a high-risk group for H1N1, talk with your health care provider nos. When the H1N1 vaccine becomes available, and if you are in a priority group, be certain to get vaccinated.
On behalf of the Lewis & Clark community, I am conveying our deepest sympathy to (Name of Student)'s family and offering any support we can provide in this time of grievous loss,
Sincerely,
Jane Monnig Atkinson
Interim President
This announcement is an important reminder to all of us in the Carroll community of how important it is to pay attention to the H1N1 flu.
If you have not checked out Carroll College's H1N1 Flu Update link on the Student Life page of the college's website recently, please review the posted information. Encourage your friends who are battling the H1N1 Flu to self-isolate, rest, stay hydrated and stay away from classes and work until 24 hours after the fever breaks without the use of fever-reducing medicine.
