Happy Founder's Day.
November 4th is the feast day of the patron saint of Carroll College, St. Charles Borromeo. Our college, as you may recall, was originally named Mount Saint Charles College. The name was chosen for the college in recognition of the 350th anniversary of the canonization of St. Charles Borromeo in 1910. The college has celebrated the feast day of St. Charles Borromeo as the college's Founder's Day.
St. Charles Borromeo, a patron saint of learning and the arts, served as the Archbishop of Milan, Papal Secretary of State under Pope Pius IV and as a leader of the Catholic Reformation during the sixteenth century. Borromeo is remembered for his "radical reforms" of the church, improving the effectiveness of his diocese, establishing a seminary to educate priests, increasing support for the poor and needy and bringing back lapsed Catholics to the Church.
Two of the buildings on the Carroll campus--St. Charles Hall and Borromeo Hall--are named in honor of our patron saint, St. Charles Borromeo. St. Charles Hall was the first building constructed on the Carroll campus and had originally housed the entire operations of the college. Borromeo Hall, was constructed in partnership with the Diocese of Helena, to provide housing for Carroll students in the Pre-Seminary program and retured priests of the diocese. JDH
