Confused and Lost
Dear Sophie: I have been hating college lately. I don't seem to care about homework and have a hard time staying focused. I don't see myself as a quitter, but I am wondering if college is right for me. I am in a number of classes that do not have anything to do with what I really want to do. I feel lost. I would rather be anywhere but here. Do I just stick it out until the end of the year?
Dear Lost and Confused:
I don't have an immediate answer for your dilemma and I don't know whether college is "right" for you or not, but here are some things for you to consider. It is quite normal for college students to experience what you have just described. It appears you have some sorting to do. Quite often, students are taking classes that are part of a required curriculum in a liberal arts college but are not necessarily linked directly to career preparation. The goal of higher education is not just about preparing you for a career. It is also about providing an environment that stretches your thinking in other directions as well. This can be challenging and frustrating. My suggestion is that you do some sorting of what is in your best interest at this time. You may want to consult your academic advisor, a trusted adult, or someone from the Wellness Center in sorting through this important decision. It might be you are simply in a minor slump or that you truly do need to opt for another avenue in pursuing your vocational goals. Finding what is "right" for you is the only thing that matters.

Warm Regards,
